Car-Accident22.jpgOne of the most asked questions I get from friends and family is "what should I do if I'm in a car accident?" It's a great question and one that I've answered numerous times. There are many ways to answer this question and there are a lot of right answers. Let's look at a some general guidelines.

First, if both cars can be driven and there are no injuries you should always move the wrecked vehicles off the road! How many times have we been coming home from work only to be stuck in traffic because two drivers refuse to move their wrecked cars off the interstate? Not only will this prevent more accidents it allows others to get home in time to watch their favorite tv shows.

Make sure you call the police and get an accident report. (That is unless you have been drinking or have illegal items in your car. If that is the case, you need to call one of the criminal lawyers at Coxwell & Associates). Don't leave until you get an accident report.

Next, don't discuss the accident with anyone except the police officer. After an accident, you're not going to be thinking clearly and you may say something inaccurately. Talk to the officer and make sure you tell him everything accurately and that he writes it down accurately.

Make sure you get the names, addresses, telephone numbers, etc. of all parties involved in the accident as well as any eyewitnesses. I cannot tell you how many times we have had to track down witnesses to an accident over the years based on just a name or even less information. It's much easier to find someone if you have all their info.

Contact your insurance company immediately and report the accident. Sometimes the police officer can give the insurance company much needed information which will help process your claim quicker.
